One of my family's favorite stores in downtown Sylva. The downstairs Orvis section is my draw. Lots o gear for fishing and fly tying needs. Love Shannon. He is a knowledgeable beyond his years fly tyer and skilled, conscientious fisherman that shares my love for "wild" water and conservation. Upstairs is loaded with name-brand outdoor apparel and accessories. Hit it the right time of year, you can find some incredible deals.
The store has a nice selection and the workers are friendly. However, I placed an order for a hat about three weeks ago. After waiting about a week and a half, I went back to the store (on WCU's campus) to check the progress of the order, and the woman said she had not ordered it yet. When getting an order from a customer, it is not good customer management to take your own sweet time on a customer's order. She finally sent the order a week ago, and the hat has still not arrived. This may be the last time they get my service.
Great help getting a pair of boots fitted and some good advice.
Though I'm new to the whole fly fishing thing, these guys made me feel welcomed and took the time to answer my questions and teach me what I needed to know about rods, reels, and flies.
As a Western North Carolina native, I was very disappointed by the lack of customer service in this store. I initially went in because of their Orvis advertisement, but I was pleased to find an outdoor store full of brands that I love. I wanted to buy a pair of Orvis jeans. My mother and I walked around the store, eventually approaching the counter for help since both salesmen were there. They completely ignored us and continued their conversation. One salesman walked away to fix a display. Even though he was only a few feet away, the other salesman avoided eye contact so much that I questioned whether he actually worked there. He just stood with his arms crossed and looked around. Finally he asked if we needed help. I told him I was looking for Orvis jeans. He looked down his nose at us and very condescendingly said that they carried Orvis items for fly fishing and not lifestyle. Then we left. The week before I had worn my Orvis jeans cod fishing in Canada. I didn't think my question was unusual. I understand if the store doesn't carry what I need, but there was no reason to be unfriendly to us. Even before I asked for help, both salesmen were indifferent to us. It was like they had seen my mother and I as not worthy of their time. It was sad to have this happen at a local business. Even though it is a further drive for me, I will continue to buy my outdoor gear at Black Dome and Orvis in Asheville.
